Summary

One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge is a super-prime residential development of 86 apartments and duplexes, including four penthouses. It also boasts a private cinema, swimming pool, squash courts, gym, a business suite with meeting rooms and three ground-floor retail units fronting Knightsbridge.

The building comprises four separate pavilions of different heights, the tallest being 13 storeys, with views over Hyde Park and Knightsbridge. The materials used for the façade reflect the colours and texture of the built environment: red-brown copper alloy façades echo the red brick buildings nearby, while pale structural concrete is in sympathy with the stone of the neighbouring Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

This most prestigious London development presented complex acoustic challenges based on:

• The project’s location

• The bespoke nature of individual dwellings

• Future residents’ high expectations

The exacting client brief demanded performance levels that not only met but exceeded the criteria demanded by Building Regulations’ Approved Document E. The project required that the final choice in material solution be as thin as possible for both practical and aesthetic reasons. Independent UKAS-accredited laboratory data was needed before the product could be finally approved.

The solution was our FIP high-performance acoustic panel, which comprises four primary layers in composite form. This panel offers a combination of stiffness and damping within a high-mass panel with a nominal thickness of only 31mm.

Testing of our high-performance acoustic panel at Sound Research Laboratories in April 2011 produced results far exceeding expectations for a thin, single homogenous panel, normally limited to 30-35dB. Our FIP panel achieved 46dB Rw, proving it was in a class of its own. Recognition continued in 2014, when judges at the ANC Acoustic Awards gave One Hyde Park the accolade of ‘highly commended’.

Ed Clarke, Clarke Saunders Associates, Noise Consultants:

“We set out to achieve a performance greater than 40dB Rw, a challenge for such a thin, single panel which would normally be limited to around 30-35dB. The result of 46dB Rw for the Siderise FIP High Performance Acoustic Panel doesn’t quite defy the laws of physics, but it’s a very impressive outcome, and a very useful product.”
